Mike
Michael
began his study of photography at an early age, providing photographs
for a weekly newspaper throughout his high school years while also
editing the school newspaper and presiding over the photography
club. While studying in the Washington area with Joyce Tenneson
and then Dale Quarterman at Virginia Commonwealth University, he
worked in a publications group shooting in studio and on location,
and began taking on commercial assignments.
Michael
has lived throughout the country, working in a variety of editorial,
advertising and commercial environments. While living in Southern
California he shot weddings and portraits for an established studio.
He returned to the classroom to teach in Colorado, and after moving
back to the east coast did extensive editorial and product illustration
work for national advertising and marketing campaigns and annual
reports.
He
is a photographer's photographer, with depth in both the creative
and technical arenas that interact to define this hybrid art form.
A master printer, Michael has remained an active darkroom and Zone
System practitioner throughout the past three decades. His work
with photographic manufacturers, most recently a decade long stint
with AGFA, have included assignments throughout the US and Europe.
His
fine art work has won numerous awards including selection by jurors
from the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art. He has mounted numerous
exhibitions, most recently of his intimate images of Jazz greats.
His work has been widely published by record companies, newspapers
including The Washington Post, and magazines including JazzTimes
